The hike up to hut San Pietro is one of the most popular for locals as well as for tourists for its ease of access, excellent cuisine and spectacular panoramic views of Lake Garda

This hike takes you to discover some of the wonders of the Tenno area.

It starts from Canale di Tenno, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy. Here, among alleys and old stone houses, time really seems to stand still. Going into the woods you go up the slopes of Calino, up to Bastiani. From here, in a few minutes you reach the mountain hut San Pietro, located on a natural terrace that offers a spectacular view of the Upper lake Garda area.

The hut is one of the favorite destinations in Garda Trentino, because it is easily accessible also by car. If you plan to eat here, remember to book!

On the way back, the path leads to the shores of Lake Tenno, famous for the extraordinary blue color of its waters. In summer, a stop for a refreshing dip is a must, before reaching the starting point of the hike.

You can hike this tour (almost) all year round, but remember to check the status of paths as well as the opening of the hut San Pietro.

Next to the hut, there is the small church of San Pietro, once a hermitage and a place of pilgrimage, which can be visited and is still consecrated today.

For any information about opening time of San Pietro hut or contact for reservations please check www.sanpietrorifugio.it.

Safety guidelines

Safety Tips

  1. Choose itineraries that suit your physical and technical abilities. Collect information about the area you are visiting and the trail’s conditions and get a detailed trekking map.
  2. Wear clothes and take equipment that suit the difficulty and length of your tour. Keep emergency gear in your rucksack, including first aid supplies.
  3. Do not go walking alone in the mountains. In any case, tell someone where you are going and report back on returning.
  4. Look at the weather forecast before setting off and always keep an eye on the weather.
  5. In case of doubt, go back. It is better to give up than risk bad weather or face difficulties beyond your strength, ability and equipment.
  6. Do not leave marked paths and do not take shortcuts.
  7. All described walks are in a natural environment and therefore their use is at your own risk.

This information is subject to inevitable variations, so none of these indications are absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid giving inexact or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason, we decline any responsibility for changes which the user may encounter. In any case, it is advisable to check environment and weather conditions before setting out.

Punto di partenza
Ville del Monte
Directions

From the car park at the junction at Ville del Monte, take the paved road leading to the Borgo di Canale, called "Doss dei Cavai". This was once the only access road to the village and the pavement still bears traces of the carts that have traveled over the centuries.

Arrived in the village, go up towards the small square: from here you can follow the white and red signs that, on the right, lead to take the path SAT 406 that leaves the small center to go steeply into the woods. The bottom of the path has loose stones, so it is advisable to pay attention, especially after rainy days.

The path climbs steadily through the trees to Bastiani. From here, always following the path SAT 406, you can reach the San Pietro hut in a few minutes.

For the return, follow the same route as far as Bastiani. Here keep to the right, following the signs for the path SAT 406A. Walk first on a dirt road and then on a path that goes through the trees for a long stretch, then descend steeply and come out at a forest road. Going down the road you will soon reach Lake Tenno, an ideal stopping point.

Following the shore of the lake, you'll reach in about 15/20 minutes a small kiosk (toilet available); from there, going up to the left, you rejoin the forest road and, soon, you reach Canale di Tenno and the starting point again.

public transportation

Tenno is connected by the intercity bus line 211 (Riva del Garda - Tenno - Fiavè - Ponte Arche).

Attention! Buses are not very frequent!

How to get there

Ville del Monte can be reached on theroad SS 421, following the signs for Tenno / Terme di Comano / Madonna di Campiglio; it is about 10 km from Riva del Garda. Leaving the car at the parking lot at the junction to Canale di Trenno, go back to the main road staying on the right and take the uphill road that leads to the village of Canale (trail sign SAT 406B / Garda Trek Medium Loop).

Where to park

Shortly after the junction for the village of Canale there is a free parking on the left.
Other possibilities for free parking near Canale.

You need to wear the right clothing and take the proper gear when you go hiking in the mountains. Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels.

What should you take when you go on a hike?

Your rucksack (for a day trip a 25/30L capacity should do) should contain:

  • water canteen (1L)
  • snacks (e.g. mixed dried fruit or chocolate)
  • First aid kit
  • windproof jacket
  • fleece
  • change of t-shirt and socks (in a plastic bag)
  • make sure to wear or at least bring a pair of long trousers
  • hat
  • sun screen
  • sunglasses
  • gloves
  • whistle to attract attention in an emergency

Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. When wet, a grassy slope, rocky slab or steep trail can be dangerous unless you are wearing the proper footwear.

And finally... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views you come across all over Garda Trentino. And if you like, you can share your memories with us at #GardaTrentino.
